Lawrence transportation projects aren’t the only ones vying for a share of the $70 million available through the federal stimulus program.

Douglas County also has lined up a list of transportation projects that could use an injection of financing, and they will be reviewed Thursday by the Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization. The group meets at 4 p.m. at City hall, Sixth and Massachusetts.

None of the county’s potential projects have been included in the MPO’s Transportation Improvement Program, a prerequisite for projects to be considered for stimulus financing.

Federal stimulus funds will pay for 100 percent of all qualifying project expenses, including land acquisition, engineering design, inspection and construction.

With all that in mind, which one of these transportation projects would you recommended to the Kansas Department of Transportation as the county’s top priority for receiving federal stimulus funds?

(And remember, completion of the South Lawrence Trafficway isn’t eligible, given that it couldn’t be under contract within a year.)

Ready for bids within six months:

1. Rebuild the Farmers Turnpike, from County Road 1029 to the trafficway? ($2.6 million)

2. Repave a more than 10-mile stretch of County Road 1023/458, including the paving of shoulders, from the town of Stull to County Road 1, which heads to Lone Star Lake? ($3.175 million)

3. Repave County Road 1057, from Kansas Highway 10 to County Road 442, which is considered “old” K-10. ($500,000)

4. Repave and repair joins of County Road 442, or “old” K-10, from the southeastern edge of Lawrence to the Wakarusa River bridge, which is just west of Eudora? ($911,000)

5. Repave County Road 458, including the paving of shoulders, from U.S. Highway 59 to East 1500 Road? ($550,000)

Ready for bids within one year:

6. Replace the bridge crossing the Wakarusa River along County Road 1057? ($2.645 million)

7. Rebuild County Road 458 northeast of Lone Star, from County Road 1 to North 1160 Road, to include new curves and paved shoulders, plus a new culvert? ($2.965 million)
