Wheel Genius: Road work this week

Inspectors and work crews are scheduled to spur some road closures this week along some major roads and highways this week.

Here’s a look at projects that could lead to delays in your area travel:

Lawrence

• Bridge work adjacent to the Kansas Turnpike in North Lawrence will spur intermittent overnight closures of North Third Street early this week. The closures — each lasting 10 to 15 minutes — are set to run from 9 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday, weather permitting. They could continue overnight Tuesday, and perhaps overnight Wednesday. Contractors need to close the road while lifting nine steel beams into place for a new turnpike bridge above North Third.

• Work to add turn lanes to provide access into Bauer Farms, a development along the north side of Sixth Street and south of Free State High School, is squeezing traffic in the area. The right lane for traffic headed west on Sixth, from Folks Road to the intersection with Wakarusa Drive, is closed for extension of an existing right-turn lane. Traffic headed north on Wakarusa, from just south of Sixth to a point just south of Overland Drive, also is getting squeezed to make way for a right-turn lane being added north of Sixth. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

• Ongoing construction of The Oread, a mixed-use and hotel project, continues to limit traffic at the northern edge of Kansas University’s main campus. These restrictions are scheduled to continue into spring: 12th Street, closed to westbound traffic from west of Louisiana Street to Indiana Street; Indiana, closed to traffic from 12th to a half block north; and Oread Avenue, restricted to local traffic only from 12th to 13th streets.

Interstate 435

• Bridge work will squeeze traffic into two open lanes along Interstate 435 at Roe Avenue in Johnson County. The work is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The Nall Avenue to westbound I-435 exit will remain open, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

• Bridge work is set to close the two right lanes for traffic headed west on I-435 at U.S. Highway 69 in Johnson County from 10 p.m. Monday through 5 a.m. Tuesday, and from 10 p.m. Tuesday through 5 a.m. Wednesday. Two ramps also are set to be closed during those overnight periods: from northbound U.S. 69 to westbound I-435, and from westbound I-435 to southbound U.S. 69.

• Sign-installation work is expected to close the left lane for traffic headed north on I-435 in Wyandotte County from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday.

U.S. Highway 69

• Bridge-inspection work is scheduled to close the right lane for traffic headed south at I-435 in Johnson County from 9 a.m. top 3:30 p.m. Monday.
