Kansas Senate to debate smoking ban

? The top leader of the Kansas Senate says a bill creating a statewide smoking ban has a good chance of winning Senate approval.

The measure would bar smoking in most public places, including bars and restaurants, and in workplaces and government buildings.

Debate in the Senate is set for Monday. Senate President Steve Morris predicts the measure will pass — if there aren’t too many amendments attached.

The bill would go next to the Kansas House. Prospects there are uncertain.

It’s the third time Kansas lawmakers have considered a smoking ban. Opposition has come from those who believe such restrictions are best handled by local governments.

At least 23 states require most public places and workplaces to be smoke-free.
