A Lawrence teenager lost control of his car and hit two telephone poles near Ninth and Iowa streets, police said.

Only one car, a 1997 blue Dodge Intrepid, was involved in the accident, which happened at 11:50 a.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Shopping Center, in the 900 block of Iowa Street.

“The vehicle veered up and over the right curb and into a telephone pole, splitting the pole,” said Kim Murphree, police spokeswoman. “The impact caused the vehicle to spin and hit another telephone pole.”

The 17-year-old driver and his 52-year-old female passenger were not injured, Murphree said.

Glad to hear that no one was injured. I'm curious, what caused the driver to loose control? The picture looks sunny.

17 year old driver. 52 year old female passenger. Middle of a school day. Hmmm. More scandalous affairs abound in Larryville?

I actually think the USBank sign behind the wrecked car is a shining endorsement of today's economy. The kid isn't a wreckless driver, he's a frickin' artist! Stunning work!

Relax and have a popsicle, rusty2. It's a cool and fruity treat that'll help you get your mind off artificial turf.

I know it's only been 2 days, Elmer, but you should pretty much be able to tell it's just not working.

Oh, the wonderful memories come flooding back. I recall pulling off the road, stopping the car and screaming at my mother that she was going to cause me to have an accident if she didn't shut-up. Once she even grabbed the steering wheel because she thought I was driving too close to the edge of the road---and I was probably at least in my forties by that time.

I'm going with the mother caused it story.

I saw this wreck about 20 minutes after it happened and he HAD to have been speeding to do the kind of damage that he did to the utility pole and the car! You can't see it in the photo but the front left wheel was laying flat on the ground when they dragged that car onto a flat-bed tow-truck!

I too saw it and it wasn't that bad. Curbs can do wicked things at 35-40mph

What this kid did was an incredible job of parallel parking in between those two polls. I'm sure he was just practicing his parking skills.

compmd 9 years, 2 months ago

From the damage it doesn't look like he was speeding.

Alexander Neighbors 9 years, 2 months ago

yea.... he wasn't speeding the poll'(s) <--- plural jumped in front of his car, I hate it when that happens.

It was not the teen's fault. It is today's society with all of its tempations and evils. The econmy is shot. There is a animal rapist on the loose. There are homless people everywhere. There is a peanut butter outbreak people! How can they expect a teen to drive in all of this?

I'm sure a Britney Spears song was on the radio, too. bet the older Female was Mom, indeed. poor kid!

thank God nobody was hurt! this really could've turned out much much worse! Mom, just let the boy drive!

Rusty2=ariadne/cool/spiderman/coltrane/sven erik alstrom, he's been tossed off here many times...tries to highjack this thread...very sad. he doesn't care about turf anyway.

anyway we can blame this accident on the Merc? maybe they'd just bought scones and the poor kid was trying to eat, drive, and listen to his mummy.
