Consultants to deliver ideas for bus system

Ideas on how to improve the city and Kansas University’s bus system should start becoming clear in about two weeks.

City commissioners were told Tuesday by consultants studying the issue that they plan to deliver their first set of recommendations by March 1 to the city and KU.

The upcoming recommendations likely won’t be sweeping in nature, but should produce ways to make some immediate improvements to current routes, said Mark Swope of the consulting firm Olsson Associates.

By January of 2010, the consultants will deliver a long list of recommendations on how to make the KU and city bus operations to work together as one system for riders.

The consultants are in town this week to talk with group stakeholders — ranging from riders to businesses — on how the system could work better.
