Take care of your workout shoes

Exercise shoes take a beating, especially with regular use. Generally, a pair of running or workout shoes should be able to endure 500 miles of running or walking. Since most of us don’t rely on odometers to count jogging and walking miles, however, we need to know how to get the maximum from our shoes.

Practicing proper shoe care can go a long way. A few useful measures courtesy of REI can help extend the life of your exercise shoes.

For exercise only: Wear your workout or jogging shoes only for the activities they were designed. Avoid wearing them around the house or when running errands.

Rotate shoes: Instead of relying on one pair of exercise shoes, try to keep two or three pairs available, which you can alternate for different workout activities. Rotating shoes will make each pair last longer.

Remove shoes properly: Don’t use one foot to kick the shoe off the other. Unlace the shoes first, and then remove them with your hands.
