Quick start propels BHS boys

Baldwin 61, Northern Heights 50

Allen — A 13-0 start to Tuesday’s boys’ basketball contest propelled Baldwin High to a road victory over Northern Heights.

The Bulldogs used their notable size difference to score most of their points in the paint. They have six players standing 6-foot-4 or taller, while Northern Heights’ tallest player is 6-4.

Baldwin’s 6-foot-8 Justin Vander Tuig led all scorers with 18 points. Baldwin will play host to Gardner-Edgerton at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Basehor-Linwood 81, Tonganoxie 59

Basehor — Tonganoxie never recovered from an early deficit.

The Bobcats (11-2) blew the game open with a 13-0 run out of the gate.

BLHS scored more points (15) in the first four minutes than THS did in the entire first half (14), and Tonganoxie trailed by 24 at the break.

Sophomore point guard Jeremy Carlisle hit two threes and led THS (8-5) with 15 points. Junior forward Keaton Schaffer scored 13, as did senior center Austin Smith.

The Chieftains will travel Friday to Perry-Lecompton.

De Soto 68, Louisburg 64

De Soto — Brendon Hudson’s running floater in the lane with 3.9 seconds to go gave De Soto a two-point lead, and Hudson hit two free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining to give De Soto the victory.

Hudson had a game-high 20 points and hit four three pointers.

Tommy Elmer added 15 for De Soto (10-4).

The Wildcats will play Spring Hill Friday night at De Soto.

Jefferson North 48, Oskaloosa 45, 2 OT

Oskaloosa — Brandon Barnes scored 14 points, and Chase Tenpenny had 12, but the Bears lost a double-overtime heartbreaker.

Eudora 72, Metro Academy 42

Eudora — Michael Bricker scored 23 points, and Justin Ballock added 17 for the Cardinals.

Mill Valley 59, Santa Fe Trail 52

Shawnee — Max Carroll and Tanner Rainbolt each had 14 points for Mill Valley.

Stuart Kraus had 18 for SFT.

Girls

Northern Heights 53, Baldwin 34

Allen — Northern Heights took advantage of a 15-2 run early and rolled over Baldwin.

Baldwin led 4-3 early, but the Wildcats soon found their offense while Baldwin struggled to make shots.

Basehor-Linwood 51, Tonganoxie 36

Basehor — The Chieftains struggled to find points in the first half, scoring six in the first quarter and eight in the second.

“We gave ourselves plenty of opportunities,” coach Randy Kraft said.

By the time they got a little offense going in the second half, the closest they could cut the deficit to was five, which happened when sophomore forward Danielle Miller hit two straight jumpers late in the third quarter.

Senior forward Roni Grizzle led THS (9-4) with 14 points. Senior point guard Chrissie Jeannin had nine.

Tonganoxie travels Friday to play Perry-Lecompton.

Louisburg 49, De Soto 36

De Soto — Shelbi Petty scored 14 points, and Kelsey Fisher added nine in a losing cause.

De Soto (2-9) will play host to Spring Hill on Friday.

Jefferson North 37, Oskaloosa 28

Oskaloosa — The Bears fell to 10-3 overall, 3-1 in the Delaware Valley League.
