House takes up latest version of deficit-busting bill

? The Kansas House is debating a bill to eliminate a state budget deficit.

The measure under consideration Wednesday makes $323 million in adjustments to the budget for the fiscal year that ends June 30.

Education funding is a key issue for House members.

A little less than half the adjustments are spending cuts. The rest come from accounting changes and refinancing state bonds.

The spending cuts do include a $48 million reduction in aid to public schools. Democrats want to reduce that cut.

Republicans who back the bill say that if protecting schools from cuts will require bigger reductions in other parts of the budget, including social services.

But some Democrats question whether so many adjustments need to be made to the budget to close the deficit.
