Treasure hunters: Meet ‘Junker Jo,’ who looks for antiques and other deals around Lawrence

Joan Stone purchased this grandfather clock at a yard sale about 10 years ago for 5.

My name is Joan Stone, and my friends call me “Junker Jo.” I am a yard sale goddess. My crown is neatly packed in a box in the basement — which of course, I picked up at a yard sale for a great price.

On yard sale mornings you will find me out early (6 a.m.) visiting yard sales, estate sales and constantly scanning the curb for trash day treasures. I like to think I am doing my part to help recycle unwanted items and recreate them into new treasures — some with their original history and some with history I have given them. I can’t seem to turn off the stories in my head that surround certain treasures. I see a piece and can imagine the family that once used the antique.

I particularly like pieces that have a historical attachment to Lawrence, Kansas and architectural salvage. This grandfather clock (pictured at left) came from a yard sale about 10 years ago. It cost me $35, and after I refinished it, it was a very good-looking clock.

Other discoveries:

• A large pine cabinet that came from Central Junior High School (the original high school in Lawrence). I purchased it at a school auction for a little over $100 about four years ago.

• Wooden molds to make wagon wheels — another yard sale find that cost approximately $90.
