Top jewelry trends will take you into spring

Check out the jewelry trends for winter/spring 2010:

Purses

Set aside your oversized boy bag. New day bags are slouchy or structured, made from refined leather or chic snakeskin. If you’re looking for a new purse, there are plenty of trendy, up-and-coming options. Medium-size carryalls with long chains or across-the-body straps are versatile and hands-free. Many envelope clutches come with a chain that can be removed or attached according to preference. Opt for a basic black, brown or red color if you want your purse to outlast the trend. Look for a wild pattern or geometric, black-and-white stripes if you like this shape but want a more unique color.

Another in-style purse option is the drawstring pouch; this purse if perfect for an evening out, but many sizes will not accommodate the contents of a daytime purse (at least, not for me, but I typically lug around far too much junk in my oversized bag).

Re-do a Statement Necklace:

Statement jewelry is still quite popular; however, styles are shifting to more classic looks that ensure longevity. Chunky,, loopy chains are one popular option. Go for shorter versus longer chain necklaces; choose bulky chains that have some weight as opposed to light, dainty chains. Other more natural looks, created with raw materials, organic shapes, stones and rough gold are a chic look that also never looks too trendy (but always in style, a great balance to achieve). For ideas, check out jewelry artist Alexis Bittar. His line is always fresh, and his pieces are gorgeous and memorable.

Bracelets:

By now, everyone’s favorite bracelet is an oversized bangle or cuff. Look for a sophisticated version of similar size, adorned with pearls or stones. For a different look, try a bracelet that is loose, draping down past your wrist. Pick one that is loose, but not too loose — nothing is more annoying than a bracelet that slides all the way up to your elbow and back down again every time you take a sip of coffee.

More jewelry ideas:

• Choose nature: Woven accessories, natural materials, neutral colors, and ethnic inspirations are low-maintenance, a great accessory to wear now and during the spring.

• Seek out costume jewelry that is light-hearted and affordable. Look for pieces that are adjustable or transformable. For example, many pins can be worn as a necklace. Many necklaces can be looped to adjust their length. Some bracelets and necklaces have charms and beads that can be repositioned or removed for alternate looks.

• Cocktail rings are still the perfect evening accessory. Wear casual clothing and downplay other accessories to make them a daytime staple.
