Winter Weather Blog: Some churches canceling Sunday services

Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. 4th St., has canceled its Sunday services.

8:19 p.m.

Kansas Department of Transportation announces following road openings:

-I-70 from Colby westbound to Airpark Road in Colorado

-K-27 north and southbound from the Nebraska state line to Goodland

-US-36 east and westbound from Atwood into Colorado

-US-40 east and westbound from Sharon Springs into Colorado

7:01 p.m.

Snowfall totals in Douglas County, through Saturday a.m., range from 8.5 inches in Lawrence to 10 inches in Lecompton, according to the National Weather Service.

6:58 p.m.

The snowfall has slowed, but Lawrence police said roadways continue to be dangerous.

“The roads still require a lot of caution,” said Sgt. Mark Warren, who urged people not to be on the roads unless it’s a necessity.

Warren said driving conditions on the main streets “are possible,” but that many of the side streets have yet to be plowed.

Warren didn’t have a tally on area accidents, but said “we’ve been busy.”

5:44 p.m.

The North Lawrence Christian Church will not have 10:55 a.m. services Sunday.

3:59 p.m.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will have no services on Sunday at its 10th Street building.

3:47 p.m.

The National Weather Service reports that occasional snow will continue through late afternoon, but the snowfall should end by midnight. Snowfall accumulation throughout the day is expected to be an inch or less.

Regional Highway Update

According to the National Weather Service, the following highways across the region are closed:

-I-70 from Colby westbound to Airpark Road in Colorado (exit 292)

-K-27 north and southbound from Nebraska state line to Goodland

-US-36 east and westbound from Atwood to Colorado

-US-40 east and westbound from Sharon Springs into Colorado

The National Weather Service reports that as of 7:45 a.m. today, Lawrence has received 6.5 inches of snow during the winter storm.

2:30 p.m.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closing early today because of the weather. The library will close at 4 p.m.

2 p.m.

The National Weather Service reports that a “moderate band of snow” will continue to limit visibility to a half mile or less in the Lawrence area. Snow accumulation is expected to be less than a half inch. After 3 p.m., the snow is expected to travel southeast, south of I-70.
