Holiday weekend heavy on repeats

The second-to-last “Doctor Who” starring David Tennant “The End of Time, Part One” (8 p.m. Saturday, BBC America) shows the Doctor realizing that his tenure is at an end, obsessed with an ancient trap closing around the planet and the words of a prophecy ringing in his ears: “He will knock four times.”

• Tom Selleck returns in a repeat helping of the fifth installment of his detective-movie series “Jesse Stone: Thin Ice.” (7 p.m. Sunday, CBS).

Selleck seems to thrive in these old-school mysteries based on the novels of Robert B. Parker. He exults in the man-of-few-words role. While visiting a fallen comrade from a stakeout gone wrong in his hospital room, an impatient nurse demands, “Are you covered in his blood”? To which Stone replies, “Some of it,” a taciturn turn of phrase that had me hooked. Look for Camryn Manheim (“The Practice”), too.

• “Nick News with Linda Ellerbee” (7 p.m., Sunday, Nickelodeon) puts the focus on animal adoption. The recent hard times have been particularly brutal to pets. Folks forced to lose their home through bankruptcy and foreclosure often turn to shelters to take care of their cats and dogs. But the sad fact remains that nearly half of the animals entering shelters will not leave alive.

But not all is downbeat. The special includes heartwarming tale of adoption from kids as well as boldfaced names, including Lance Bass, Sophia Bush, Tony Hawk, Bonnie Hunt, Kimora Lee Simmons, Kellan Lutz, Maria Menounos and Tiffani Thiessen.

• “Witness: The Kidnapping of Patty Hearst” (9 p.m., Sunday, MSNBC) recalls the 1974 abduction of the daughter of a media baron and long strange trip of her captivity, time as a fugitive, capture and release.

Psychologists, journalists and lawyers have spent decades debating whether Hearst joined her captors, the bizarre Symbionese Liberation Army, as a willing “revolutionary” or as a brainwashed victim.
