From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 24, 1909: “The community is looking forward to a Christmas with power problems due to the ice jams in the river. But of all the places where a good Christmas dinner should be served, there will be no such event at the poor farm where the budget is too tight to provide such. Even prisoners in the jail may fare better, meaning it is better to be a criminal this year than poor. … Santa Claus was in town today and will be again tonight and he had a long list of things that people want and need.”

it's always been better to be criminal than to be poor, at least if you're in jail you are warm and well fed...
