Personal property assessments coming

December 23, 2009

The Douglas County Appraiser’s office will mail the 2010 personal property assessment forms Dec. 31.

Taxpayers who own personal property, such as boats, mobile homes, large trucks, machinery and equipment, will receive the forms.

Owners must sign the forms and return them to the appraiser by March 15. Anyone who files late will be subject to a penalty.

Any taxpayers who own personal property in Douglas County but do not receive a form should call the appraiser’s office at 832-5289.

Do you really own your property if the government can take it from you because you don't pay an annual tax on it?

Are we satisfied with a system of government that requires us to return forms every year cataloging our taxable personal property? When do we demand change from a government that says, "Anyone who files late will be subject to a penalty."

It does seem as though requiring us to return forms every year cataloging our taxable personal property is a violation of our fifth amendment rights.

It also seems as though taxing us merely for having possessions amounts to seizure of property without due process.

They get away with taxation because enough of us really believe that this taxation was enacted by politicians who actually represent us.

I'm not saying I think that all taxes are evil, or that I think governments could function effectively without taxes. I do think that civil servants don't understand that taxes have an adverse affect on the economy.
