Powell Gardens perfect site for winter wonderland

The Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel at Powell Gardens overlooks a scenic lake and is the site of weddings, seasonal performances and quiet meditation.

If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, you may want to visit the conservatory at Powell Gardens.

“Wonderland in White” is the theme of the display featuring winter white flocked trees, Christmas palms, white poinsettias and silver accents. The conservatory, with its soaring glass ceiling, is part of the nature-inspired buildings designed by architect Faye Jones, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. The changing themes presented throughout the gardens make it an interesting destination year round.

“In January the conservatory will change and feature a variety of succulents and plants that thrive in dry climates. Our displays are always changing so there’s always something new to see during every season,” says Ann Wildeboor, Powell horticulturist.

Twin limestone fireplaces add striking ambiance to the Grand Hall of the Visitors Center, where a collection of stately evergreens, decked for the holidays, are the centerpiece.

Nearby, the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel brings the outdoors inside with sweeping vistas of the nearby lake and offers a meditative atmosphere that also serves as the site for weddings, concerts and performances.

The not-for-profit botanical gardens, located 30 miles east of Kansas City in Kingsville, Mo., offer a magical display to celebrate the season. Twenty-seven varieties of poinsettias, including Icy Punch with silver-pink variegated bracts, are featured. The poinsettias are grown on site from 3,000 rooted cuttings in the greenhouse complex.

“Home and Away” premieres at 6:30 p.m. Mondays on Sunflower Broadband Channel 6 and replays throughout the week.
