25 years ago: Depot demolition delayed

The Union Pacific Railroad called off its pre-Christmas demolition of the North Lawrence depot for a month while various agencies considered ways to save and preserve the historic site. However, UP said it would have difficulty extending the delay by more than 30 days. A Depot Committee had been appointed to study the matter and the alternatives.

City officials issued a building permit for the new terminal at the Lawrence Municipal Airport and a new hangar was due to be in the coming format, as well.
