Flu prompts prison to cancel visits, programs

? Officials at a prison in Hutchinson have canceled all weekend visits and programs involving outside volunteers because of a flu outbreak.

All inmate transfers at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility Central Unit have also been canceled through next week.

Prison officials say the decision does not affect the medium-custody East Unit or the minimum-custody South Unit.

Kansas Department of Corrections spokesman Bill Miskell did not know exactly how many inmates were ill. And he said the outbreak had not caused any staffing issues.

But he says enough inmates are sick to require that operations are changed for the foreseeable future. No inmates have been hospitalized.

Prison officials say they’ll re-evaluate the situation sometime next week.
