Another Democrat is considering running in the 3rd District U.S. House race, after incumbent Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Lenexa, announced he would not seek a seventh term.

State Sen. David Haley, D-Kansas City, Kan., said Thursday morning that people have encouraged him to run.

Haley said his experience running two statewide campaigns would prove to be valuable in a U.S. House race. He also said informal polling has shown he has stronger name recognition in the district than Kansas City, Kan., Mayor Joe Reardon, who is looking at seeking the Democratic nomination. Carol Marinovich, a former Kansas City, Kan., mayor, has also been mentioned as a Democratic candidate.

The 3rd congressional district includes eastern Douglas, Wyandotte and Johnson counties.

“Really, that is our objective: To look at the organization and to look at the prospect of financing a 300-day sprint,” said Haley, who in the Legislature has advocated for the state to abolish the death penalty.

The GOP field is already crowded with former state Sen. Nick Jordan, of Shawnee, Rep. Kevin Yoder, of Overland Park, former state Rep. Patricia Lightner, of Olathe, and candidates Daniel Gilyeat, John Rysavy and Tom Scherer. State Rep. Pat Colloton, Leawood, is also exploring a bid.

Jasmin Talbert, of Overland Park, is running a campaign for the Libertarian Party.
