100 years ago: Power plant woes threaten to leave city in the dark

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 17, 1909: There is no prospect of any relief from the darkness that now threatens the city. The capacity of the power plant was decreased another 150 horsepower this morning by the burning of one of the four boilers. Lawrence is now lighted and the streets cars are being run on 350 horsepower when the usual capacity is 1,400 horsepower. A ice gorge from the bridge to three miles down the river has prevented water from flowing over the dam to power the generators. Already weak, the plant was further hurt by the boiler break. Any users of power have had to scale back or halt use for this crisis.
40 years ago: KU off to 5-1 start

The Kansas basketball team under coach Ted Owens was off to a 5-1 start after a home court victory over SMU. The lone loss had been at Kentucky by a score of 115-85 in the second game of the season. Mainstays for the Jayhawks were Dave Robisch, Pierre Russell, Bud Stallworth, Bob Kivisto and Roger Brown.
25 years ago: Kansas Highway 10 completed

A new free, four-lane direct route from Lawrence to the Kansas City area opened. The last leg of the Kansas Highway 10 project, linking Lawrence to Interstate 435 in Lenexa, was finally completed after four years of construction and delays. The new Kansas leg allowed local drivers to avoid a roundabout way of getting to I-35 and other key Johnson County locations.
