Charges filed against police battery suspect

Prosecutors filed charges Monday against a Topeka man accused of battering a police officer who was investigating a Sunday morning shooting in downtown Lawrence.

Rondell Harris-Roberts, 21, was charged with one count of misdemeanor battery on a law enforcement officer.

Lawrence police officer Marc Miller received a laceration above his right eye, and was treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Harris-Roberts is being held in Douglas County Jail on $1,500 bond. He’s scheduled for an appearance in court at 9 a.m. today.

Officers have not arrested anyone else in connection with the incident outside the Granada, 1020 Mass. Police said shots were fired after a brawl inside the establishment was pushed outside around closing time.

A 19-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man received nonlife-threatening wounds from the gunfire. Police also investigated a second report of a shooting in the area immediately east of the Granada, where they found two vehicles with bullet holes.

A police spokesman said information about suspects or suspect vehicles was not available for release Monday.
