25 years ago: Penalty for work undone on schools

The contract between the local school district and a Topeka contractor was imposing a $200-a-day penalty for work undone on local schools. However, the contractor cited circumstances that justified the delay of the work because of special clauses in the contract.

The issue of home schooling and how it should be regulated was to be a major topic in the coming state legislative session, said Rep. Jessie Branson of Lawrence. She said total emphasis needed to be placed on what was best for students.

National average wheat yields might climb to 50 bushels an acre in the next five to seven years, further depressing the market by building more surplus supplies, an agricultural economist stated. Local farmers said such a rise could be quite harmful to their operations.
