100 years ago: Stores packed with toys

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 15, 1909: “The local stores are crowded with toys, many of the new mechanical types that make Johnny happy. There also are new dolls for the girls and it would appear many will be happy when Santa Claus visits. … Ice which is piled nearly 10 feet deep from the local bridge to a sandbar three miles below the dam in Lawrence has caused the power plant and Bowersock’s mill to shut down. There is no fall in the water where it goes over the dam and the result is there is no power. Lawrence is now lighted at night by about half the horsepower it usually has. Street cars are badly hampered. This is the second time in the last 20 years that water has backed up above the dam and caused serious power problems.”
