25 years ago: Two Oklahoma escapees captured after high-speed chase

Facing an Environmental Protection Agency crackdown on rules for handling pesticide sales, Douglas County’s weed control chief, Jerry Kemberling, was protesting that the federal regularors were fickle and that a state law was needed to achieve some stability.

Local law enforcement officers captured two escapees from an Oklahoma pre-release facility following a high-speed chase on rain-slick streets in Lawrence. Nobody was hurt as the convicted burglars-robbers were nabbed.

Edward and Sandra Reed planned to request a permit for a second taxi service in Lawrence. Currently, Yellow Cab-Union Cab owned by Ward Thompson had the taxi service.

Lawrence got rain and some icing but escaped a serious storm that hit a number of Kansas areas to the west. Goodland reported up to 11 inches of snow. Other western regions got more than a foot of snow cover.
