Dean Robert Lineberry said it was “an unpleasant and difficult situation.” The college had tried for several years to save the program, he said, to no avail.

Gov. John Carlin ruled out asking for a so-called “booster tax” for Kansas but said he still was considering a sales tax hike to prevent to the coming legislature.

Meetings continued on whether to consider the KU Adams Alumni Center eligible for tax exemption.

Freezing rain hit during the morning causing treacherous streets and walks. However, there were no early reports of any serious accidents. Many fender-benders occurred, however.

Union Pacific had set no date for intended demolition of its North Lawrence depot, which had stood since 1889. Local people were working to determine if the historic site could be put to good use and several meetings were planned to discuss the issue.
