Make holiday cards more meaningful

Nearly 7 billion greeting cards are purchased annually in the United States alone, according to the Greeting Card Association. Here are some tips to make the gesture more thoughtful:

• Mention a memory: As you begin to write your best wishes for a friend or family member, recall a fond memory you both shared and be sure to remind them you look forward to spending more time together in 2010.

• Say it with a photo: They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, so include a few snapshots with your card to update everyone on this year’s happenings. A wedding photo, cap and gown portrait or even a candid will spark table conversations any day of the year.

• Tuck in a recipe: Unable to make the usual holiday get-together? Fold in a favorite step-by-step for loved ones to enjoy in your absence.

• Kids count! Have the kids add their own personal message in your cards this year. Their contribution will only add to the card’s sentimental value.

• Signed and sealed: Feel free to decorate the outside and let your personality shine through with colorful inks, monogrammed adhesives and seasonal stickers.
