A 25-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man who led officers on a destructive high-speed chase in January 2008 that ended in downtown Lawrence was sentenced on Wednesday to serve 14 years in federal prison.

Edward Wise had pleaded guilty in December 2008 to one count of brandishing a firearm during a violent crime and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Wise admitted to stealing a North Lawrence woman’s van on Jan. 30, 2008. After officers chased him from Leavenworth County back to Lawrence, he carjacked a sport utility vehicle from another Lawrence woman near 19th and Massachusetts streets.

Wise crashed the vehicle downtown and tried to use a gun to steal another vehicle before a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper incapacitated him with a Taser.

U.S. District Judge Kathryn Vratil ordered Wise to serve two sentences consecutively for a total of 171 months in prison, according to court records. He must also pay $13,556 in restitution.

I think he should have taken a little extra time during the court proceedings and asked the judge to legally change his last name.

He destroyed my daughter's (w/3 kids) only transportation in his little "rampage". Little p*#ck. I ended up giving her mine and buying another car. No easy deal as we are absolutely not made of $ and she had to put a considerable amount of $ into it to be able to use it. His restitution amount should be much higher. Yeah, I hope the boys in the "house" have a good time making him their playtoy.

Incapacitated with a Taser by a KHP officer ? He was Tased in the back after a Lawrence Police Officer had talked the man into laying down his gun, and he did. The man had the gun to his head and told the Officer that he would shoot himself. The Officer told the man that if he would lay down the gun that he wouldn't be roughed up by the Police . After he layed the gun down the KHP Officer walked up behind the man and Tasered him in the back. I'm not saying he didn't deserve it, just telling how it went down.
