An apartment fire in frigid temperatures Thursday morning has displaced 14 residents of a building at the Cedarwood Apartments complex, 2430 Ousdahl Road.

Firefighters were originally dispatched at 6:09 a.m., said Division Chief Eve Tolefree, of Lawrence Douglas County Fire and Medical.

Lawrence police officers arrived on the scene and discovered heavy smoke coming from the bottom floor of the building, prompting fire crews to call for a second alarm.

Firefighters had the blaze under control 40 minutes later, Tolefree said. No firefighters were injured, and authorities accounted for all occupants of the building, she said.

Five units in the building sustained fire and smoke damage.

The Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross was working Thursday with the 14 occupants who are displaced.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire estimate damages.

According to Douglas County records, Cedarwood Villa LLC owns the building. The buildings at 2414 and 2430 Ousdahl Road are appraised together at $800,000.

I hope everyone got out safely and no one was hurt. Those apartments are death traps.

Dido on the advertising. Very transparent and tasteless.

Crass and tasteless perhaps, but you've got to pay for it one way or another boys & girls.

It's actually not a good ad anyway. It is barely informative. I am more offended that someone was paid good money to make that thing.

Hi all--

I understand the frustration with seeing advertising on videos like this, but at the moment it's unavoidable. It's no secret that economic times are tough, and that's as true for news organizations as anyone. We staff our newsroom 24 hours a day, to get you videos and stories like this. The primary way we pay for this is through advertising. In certain, extremely sensitive circumstances, we'll disable advertisements on a video in a story, but in other circumstances, these ads are the way we pay to continue to provide this information.

Let me know if you have specific questions.

I used to live in them apartments. The service I got there was ridiculous. On the first night my power went out when I turned on the kitchen light. I had to go and stay with a friend the first night. ABout a week later I turned on a top burner and it caught fire and I had to extinguish it. It took them 6 days to replace my stove. Abou three weeks later the place flooded from a heavy thunderstorm with heavy rain. It ruined alot of my furniture. They didn't try and clean it so I can sleep in my apartment. I said f-this I am moving and they would not break my lease or give me a differant apartment. The carpet had mold under the carpet. They never gave me my deposit back because the carpet had stains in it. LMAO I hate that place now especially the manager.

Instead of complaining about the advertising, shouldnt we all be glad the local fire department has been able to make it in this economy and that we had someone to respond???? Amazing how a little distraction can upset so many people when they are trying to live their lives in other peoples drama.

The ad is not important. What is important is that a landlord is not living up to their legal obligations and the status of the 14 people who now have to find a new place to live. No easy task in this economy.

Cedarwood has a large Mexican population, many who speak very little English. You can bet Cedarwood will just give the victims the brush off. Who are they going to complain to? Maybe they're bosses will help them get Cedarwood to help them relocate.

I bet there is twice as many people living in that place than are supposed to be!!!

Have you considered expanding the Stripper Blog to a full on pay-4-porn site to help fund your "news" organization in these tough economic times?

How is the Landlord not living up to legal obligations?
