25 years ago: Regents staffer’s student status, salary raises eyebrows

A executive director of the Kansas Board of Regents Staff, Stanley Z. Koplik had an annual salary of $61,200. But he had raised some eyebrows as a student at Kansas University. Kansas Atty. Gen. Robert Stephan called Koplik “the highest paid student in the state.” Formally, no rules seemed to be broken but some felt Koplik’s educational role was questionable. Koplik said his studies in no way compromised his regents role.

One American bore signs of torture after he and other hostages were freed from a hijacked Kuwaiti Airways plane at Tehran Airport by Iranian security men disguised as garbage collectors. Seven remaining hostages were taken out of the airliner and all said there had been terrorized “every moment of the ordeal.” Two American passengers earlier had been executed after four gunmen seized the plane. U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz said the U.S. had global peacekeeping responsibilities that required it to combat the type of “brutal terrorism” that had led to the killings.

Federal cutbacks were due to cut into the operations of a number of Lawrence programs, particularly in the Community Development category.
