100 years ago: Training School proving popular

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 9, 1909: The Manual Training School has already worked its way into the hearts of the people of Lawrence through the keen interest taken in its various departments by the boys and girls of the city. The various trade and vocational and domestic courses have been surveyed by local officials who are delighted at the progress at the new facility. . . . Tommy Johnson, who saved the day at Nebraska and left a string of Missouri Tigers in his path has been chosen as the Kansas University football captain for the coming season. Johnson was by all means the star quarterback of the Missouri Valley and deserves this high honor. The KU team now has disbanded until the coming summer and fall. Johnson will be a fine leader. . . . The cold spell apparently has caused a lot of citizens to be “good” since there have been no recent cases in court. The county attorney says he is “lonesome” because of the lack of cases. . . . The local street car company is asking citizens to submit their complaints so they can be studied and, if possible, eliminated.
