Winter weather has forced the Kansas Turnpike Authority to postpone for a second time the demolition of another section of the Kansas River bridge at the northern edge of Lawrence.

Crews were scheduled to use explosives on Wednesday to drop a bridge that used to carry eastbound traffic. Now, demolition is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday — weather dependent.

Rachel Bell, a KTA spokeswoman, said that winter weather in the area requires crews to plow the roads and also made it unsafe Tuesday for crews to do blast-preparation work underneath the old bridge.

This demolition work was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but last week KTA officials, in anticipation of the winter weather, had pushed it back a day.

A fourth blast that will take out much of the former westbound turnpike bridge is still tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. Dec. 15, but Bell said project managers will evaluate that timetable during the next couple days. It is dependent on the weather and construction progress.
