25 years ago: Ramada Inn up for auction

A Kansas University holiday tradition returned for its 60th annual rendition when the choirs of KU marched down the halls of Hoch Auditorium for Vespers. It was part of a yearlong program of events celebrating the KU music department’s 100th anniversary. James Ralston was director of KU choral activities.

Hijackers holding a jetliner at the Tehran airport marched a man who identified himself as a U.S. diplomat out of the plane, made him beg for his life and then shot and killed him. He was not identified. The State Department said there were three officials from the U.S. Agency for International Development among the hostages. So far there had been three hostage deaths in the standoff.

Lawrence’s Ramada Inn was up for auction. A notice said the property at 2222 W. Sixth would be sold “to the highest and best bidder for cash in hand” at the south door of the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center on Dec. 27. The motel remained open for business, however. There had been a long legal tangle involving the property.
