Boys

Roy Wedge, sr., Lawrence High

Wedge was the Class 6A state champion, a team captain and a member of the Class 6A all-state squad. He finished with a season-best time of 15:41.12 and was second at the Rim Rock Classic and Manhattan Invite. He won everything else.

Joseph Springer, jr., Lawrence High

Springer finished 14th at the Class 6A state meet and was a key member of back-to-back Class 6A state championship squads. His season-best time was 16:13.2, which earned him a fourth-place finish at regionals. Springer also won the SM West Invitational for the second year in a row.

Calvin Morgan, sr., Lawrence High

Morgan was the undisputed vocal leader of the LHS team, which captured a second-straight Class 6A team title this fall. He finished 10th at the Class 6A state meet, was a team captain and a top-10 finisher in all but two meets. His season-best time was 16:24.0, and his season-best finish was a second-place showing at the SM West Invitational.

Logan Sloan, jr., Free State High

Sloan helped pace the Free State High boys to their best finish in years, as he finished eighth at the Class 6A state meet, eighth at the Class 6A regional meet and third at the Sunflower League meet. He also finished first at the Haskell Invitational and helped pace the FSHS boys to a third-place finish at regionals.

Tony Weiss, jr., Baldwin High

Back after a solid sophomore season, Weiss placed third at the Class 4A state meet and also was the regional champion. He won two other meets during the regular season and placed 13th at the famed Rim Rock course.

Ivan Espinosa, jr., Eudora High

Espinosa cracked the top 20 at the ultra-competitive Class 4A state meet with a 20th-place finish in a time of 17:29. He earned first-team all-league honors by finishing third at the league meet and was the Gardner Invitational champion. He also finished runner-up at Tonganoxie and Wellsville.

Angel Vasquez, fr., De Soto High

Vasquez finished seventh at the Class 4A state meet. He also finished third at the 4A regional meet and finished the season with five top-10 finishes in seven races. He battled injuries in the middle of the season and missed a few races, but saved his best for last, cracking the top 10 at state.

Honorable Mention: Tosh Mihesuah and Brian Wright, Baldwin High; Tyler Gude, Mill Valley High; Kyle Snow, Eudora High; Brandon McCaffrey, Bishop Seabury Academy; Austin Hinchey and Ry Patton, De Soto High.

Girls

Sienna Durr, fr., Baldwin High

Durr finished fourth at the Class 4A state meet, was the Frontier League champion, won the Sabetha Invite and placed 25th at Rim Rock.

Elizabeth Sigvaldson, so., Baldwin High

Sigvaldson was at her best when it mattered most, finishing seventh at the Class 4A state meet, fifth at regionals and sixth at the Frontier League meet. Her steady season helped lead the Bulldogs to the Class 4A state title.

Kaitlyn Barnes, fr., Baldwin High

Barnes joined fellow freshman Sienna Durr in finding her way to the front of the pack more often than not this season, finishing 11th at state, sixth at regionals and second at the Frontier League meet.

Heather Karlin, jr., Baldwin High

Karlin was by far one of the most experienced runners on Baldwin’s state championship team this season, and it showed at state, when she finished 16th and helped her team bring home the title. She also placed seventh at regionals and fifth at the Frontier League meet.

Hayley Francis, jr., Free State High

Despite suffering through a handful of injuries — like most of her teammates — Francis was the finest Firebird standing at the end of the season. She capped off 2009 in memorable style, finished 15th at state, fifth at regionals and seventh at the Sunflower League meet. She won medals at all three meets and was the highest finishing Firebird each time.

Morgan Flannigan, sr., Free State High

Known primarily as one of the state’s top swimmers, Flannigan showed that all of that stamina in the water translates to land, too. In earning a spot at the Class 6A state meet, Flannigan finished seventh at regionals and also was 17th at the Sunflower League meet. At state she finished 33rd in 16:32.72.

Lacey Erickson, jr., De Soto High

Despite being injured for most of the season, and, therefore, not having the proper amount of time to train, Erickson finished 13th at the Class 4A state meet. She ran in just four meets all year but made the most of each, winning the Anderson County meet, finishing third at the Wamego meet, fourth at the regionals meet and 13th at state.

Honorable Mention: Andie Jeannin, Tonganoxie High; Kaya Riemann, Eudora High; Maddie McCaffrey, Bishop Seabury Academy; Shelby Clark, Lucy Daldorph and Michala Ruder, Lawrence High; Beth Reichenberger and Ellie Sheridan, De Soto High; Katie Hirsch, Perry-Lecompton High.
