100 years ago: Scarlet fever on rise

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 5, 1909: Dr. John C. Rudolph warns that scarlet fever is on the increase and that too many people are not observing quarantine regulations. He says there is no current fear about sending children to school but that every precaution should be taken and quarantines honored. He has gone after hotels in Baldwin for not properly observing quarantine rules. He also says some physicians have not reported cases and that this could lead to new problems. The state says it will prosecute errant doctors in this matter. . . The controversy continues about use of the Bell telephone system and the Missouri and Kansas Telephone Co. The systems do not interact and there is pressure for one system to serve everyone. . . . A new two-story and basement brick warehouse 74 by 50 feet will be built upon the lot just west of the Boener Brothers Cigar Factory. The Helm Commission Co. has made plans for the new building.
