100 years ago: Football coach demands more money

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 2, 1909: “Coach Bert Kennedy who has been the successful KU football coach with one of the most remarkable records in the west will not return next year unless there is a substantial increase in his salary. He came here in 1904 at $1,200 a year. He now gets $2,200 and is the lowest paid coach in the Missouri Valley Conference. KU fans have little thought that Kennedy will not be kept as coach after his current three-year contract expires this month.”
