From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 1, 1909: “A fire which started from a defective flue consumed the house on the Clark farm two miles north of Lawrence. Some insurance was carried on the place. … Merrill Templeton of Washburn College apparently will be the only Kansan to get a Rhodes Scholarship this year. Four applicants took the exam and the Washburn man was the only one who passed.”
