Ted Haggart, president and CEO of Douglas County Bank in Lawrence, received the Paul Harris Fellowship and a District Governor’s Citation for his work with the Lawrence Rotary Club. Haggart was recognized for the awards as well as the completion of his term as club president during the club’s July 6 meeting.

Haggart accepted the District Governor’s Citation from past district governor Vicki Randel. The award is given to recognize Rotarians and clubs for accomplishments that are determined worthy by the governor.

The Paul Harris Fellowship was presented by current Rotary President Ann Evans in recognition of his leadership and support of the club’s projects. During Haggart’s term, he initiated the past president’s advisory council to provide mentors to new members as well as the initiation of the Sole Patrol Projects and the Safe Sleep for Babies Project. International projects carried out by club members during his leadership included books for school children in Mongolia, support for Engineers without Borders, medicine for people in Panama, and financial support for the elimination of rag pickers in Mumbai.

Haggart’s other community activities include serving as chairman of the Lawrence Regional Technology Center, co-chairman of the Lawrence Bioscience Task Force, and past president of the Friends of the Lied Center. Other board memberships include the United Way of Douglas County, the Friends of the Spencer Museum of Art, and the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation (KTEC).

• Seventeen members of the Lawrence River City Cosmopolitan Club attended the Cosmopolitan International convention, July 29-Aug. 2 in New Orleans. Cosmopolitan International is a service organization with clubs in the United States, Canada and Mexico, raising funds for diabetes education and research. The Lawrence club received first place honors for its newsletter, with editor Tommy Johnson, and first place for its yearbook, with chairwoman Nancy Donahey. Susie Bartlett was installed as the governor for the Mo-Kan Federation, which consists of 13 clubs in Missouri and Kansas. The Lawrence club supports Health Care Access, providing diabetes supplies and financial support.

• University Bridge Club bridge announces results of its Aug. 22 meeting, with hosts Janet Dunn, Donna Gatts, and Tom and Cathy Waller.

Blue winners were Marc Kuepker, first; Steven Bogler, second; John Stark, third; Al Smith, fourth; and George Bocquin, fifth.

Pink winners were Bonnie Haney, first; Cora Kuepker, second; Donna Gatts and Cathy Waller, third; Willi Stark, fourth; and Sadie Deaton, fifth.

• The Lawrence Happy Times Squares square dance club will start a new dance session, taught by Vic Perry, caller for the club, on Sept. 21. For more information, call Lynn and Sherry Brun at 312-7105, or Dave and Barbara Neff at 843-8966. The first three sessions are free.

• The Wednesday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on Aug. 19 was directed by Chris Lane. North-South winners were Harry Shaffer and Catherine Blumenfeld, first in A; Lois Clark and Shirley Reese, second in A and first in B; Lester Dalton and Klee Zaricky, third in A and second in B; Bobby Patton and Eleanor Patton, fourth in A, third in B, and first in C; and Ann Thompson and Gary Joyce, second in C.

East-West winners were Virginia Seaver and Madelyn Jenks, first in A; Sally Taylor and Yvonne Hedges, second in A and first in B; Eldon Herd and Shari Krentzel, third in A and second in B; David Piro and Paul Heitzman, fourth in A; Bebe Huxtable and Wanna Roszel, first in C; and Patricia Lechtenberg and Jean Khatib, second in C.

The Thursday Morning Duplicate Mentor Bridge Club’s game on Aug. 20 was directed by Chris Lane. Winners were Earle Core and Charles Hedges, first; Virginia Seaver and Florine Creek tied in second with Chris Lane and Becky Mullins; and Shirley Reese and Jean Khatib, fourth.

• The Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on Aug. 21 was directed by Virginia Seaver. North-South winners were Janice Hollowell and Jean Otney, first in A, B and C; Mary Fenlon and Wanda Durbin, second in A; Shirley Reese and Chris Lane, third in A and second in B; and Marilyn Martin and Clarice Broz, fourth in A and second in C.

East-West winners were Madelyn Jenks and Mona Bell, first in A, B and C; Klee Zaricky and Virginia Seaver, second in A; Catherine Blumenfeld and Grant Sutton, third in A and second in B; and Nita Scales and Jolene Andersen, fourth in A, third in B, and second in C.

• The Monday Evening Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on Aug. 24 was directed by Virginia Seaver. This was the last week bridge members could qualify for the North America Open Pairs competition. North-South winners and qualifiers were Harry Shaffer and Jim Zhang, first in A and B; Donna Johnson and James Masilamani, second in A; Vince Nordberg and Jim Stewart, third in A, second in B, and first in C; Kent McCullough and Lois Clark, third in B; Virginia Seaver and Chris Lane qualified in B; and Albert Ballard and Earle Core qualified in C.

East-West winners were Steven Vossler and Larry Weatherholt, first in A; Julia Dalton and Mary Fenlon, second in A and first in B; Eldon Herd and Shari Krentzel, third in A and second in B; Brad Ellis and Dave Chipman qualified in A and B; and Lynette Forbes and Brad Wertz placed first in C.
