25 years ago: New zoning district proposed

The City Commission spent two hours hammering out proposed changes in the city’s zoning ordinance calling for, among other things, formation of a new “inner neighborhood commercial” zoning district.

The Student Loan Marketing Assn. formally announced it would establish its first regional service center in Lawrence, employing about 250 people over the next two years. The association, known as Sallie Mae, had leased 8,000 square feet of office space at 1919 Del. and was to begin operations in early October. Larry Hough was senior vice president of servicing and systems for Sallie Mae and was here for the announcement. The firm was the nation’s largest investor in insured student loans. Manager of the local office was to be Barry Brotman, formerly an assistant manager at Sallie Mae’s center in Virginia. Sallie Mae had been established by Congress in 1973.

Enrollment at Haskell Indian Junior College dropped by 200 students for the fall term. Local officials blamed it on “bad changes” in federal regulations. The current enrollment figure was 705.
