100 years ago: Superintendent of insurance reduces rates

August 28, 2009

From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 27, 1909: “The ruling by state superintendent of insurance Barnes is due to reduce local insurance rates about 12 percent. The commissioner came here to study the sudden increases under the new laws and has ruled against most of them. Rebates are to be paid to those who have opened new policies at the higher rates since June 10. … County Supt. Bowman today prepared a list of the books to be used in the district schools of the county this school year. The list has several changes and will be of great interest to the parents since there are several good new additions. . . . Whitsed Laming has returned from a trip to Europe to consider financing for the interurban rail line in this year and says he is optimistic that funds will be adequate to proceed. “
