Woman transported to hospital after accident at 23rd and Iowa streets

A woman in her 20s was transported Thursday morning to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after injuring her tongue during an accident at 23rd and Iowa streets, police said.

Police said the victim was a passenger in a car driven by a 24-year-old Lawrence woman, who was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after running a red light and driving into a semi truck. The accident happened at 2 a.m.

Witnesses said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when it entered the intersection at 23rd and Iowa streets. The car was traveling south on Iowa when it hit the semi truck, which was turning left onto Iowa.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Ted Bordman said the truck continued on without stopping because the driver was not aware he had been hit. The truck driver said he only felt a slight shift in weight when the accident occurred.

A police spokeswoman on Thursday afternoon said she did not have the names of the individuals involved in the accident.

The condition of the injured passenger, who cut her tongue during the accident, is unknown.
