Second of four forums on homelessness scheduled

August 26, 2009

A forum examining mental illness and its links to homelessness is scheduled for next week.

The Coalition on Homeless Concerns will host the forum at 7 p.m. Monday at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

The event will include presentations from Susan Crain Lewis, CEO of the Mental Health Association of the Heartland, and Simon Messmer, director of Housing to Homes.

The forum is the second of four on the subject. The third forum is scheduled for Sept. 28. The final forum is set for Nov. 30.

Mental illness has no bearing on homelessness the forum is misleading the real reason why there is homelessness because of unaffordable housing in douglas county no one should attend a misleading forum.

Because we don't want them here and most of them aren't even from Lawrence!!

You cater to them and they will come!!

Perhaps if Larryville wasn't so self-consumed with it's Narcissistic image of itself it would take another look at a very real problem. There ARE homeless people in beautiful Larryville. These are people who may not be pretty, but they are real people with real needs. We simply cannot sweep these people into the Kaw and hope they go away. We cannot ignore them.

Instead of looking for ways to carefully regulate them and isolate them from our finer senses, why not accept that Larryville, along with other fine metropolitan areas, do have the homeless amongst us, and learn how to serve and protect these people with as much passion as we have for our precious KU students.

Larryvillains pride themselves for being part of the liberal left. Why not demonstrate the liberal left's finest principles by extending the hand of compassion and finding a way to accomodate those less fortunate than ourselves?
