25 years ago: KU enrollment soars

Local delegates to the Republican National Convention admitted they were excited “and quite moved” by the patriotic flavor of the convention’s finale in Dallas. They were Donna Shultz, Ken Martinez and Bernice Todd. Incumbent Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush were the party nominees to oppose Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro, the Democratic standard-bearers.

Kansas University officials said fall enrollment was soaring beyond expectations and there was a scramble to find more instructors and schedule more classes to meet the higher demands. Gil Dyck, dean of educational services, said an expected enrollment of a little over 24,000 might easily rise past 25,000. Evidence there would be some 2,500 new students instead of the anticipated 1,500.

A preliminary hearing was set for a Lawrence teen-ager charged with the first-degree murder and aggravated burglary in the beating death of 80-year-old Marguerite Vinyard. She had been found on Aug. 5 beaten to death in her home at 2100 Tenn. The suspect was Donald E. Alexander, 18. Police had been concerned for some time about the lack of evidence until a tip led to an arrest.
