From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 23, 1909: An enthusiastic meeting of the Masons last night resulted in the appointment of a subcommittee to solicit funds to erect an entirely new building on the old Methodist Church site instead of repairing the old building. Another special meeting is planned to discuss details. But a new temple seems almost assured. . . . The Douglas County Fair Assn. will open next week with a big holiday and celebration over the opening of the new street car line which will be held opening day of the fair. The street car people have given definite promises to complete the line so the first car can be run on Sept. 21, opening day of the fair. It should be a great day for all citizens. . . . It was 46 years ago now that the infamous Quantrill Raid occurred here, leading to the deaths of some 180 men and boys and a destruction of most of the town. It was easily the blackest day in local history and will be forever remembered for its violence and murder. . . . William Jenney, a medical student at the university, drowned in the Kaw here last evening when the canoe in which he and a friend were riding capsized and three Jenney into the current. The body has been recovered. The friend survived.
