Area vineyard looking for volunteers to pick grapes for charity

The Jefferson Hill Vineyard near McLouth is seeking grape pickers in exchange for a donation to the picker’s favorite charity.

The tentative date is Sept. 19 and the picking begins around 8 a.m. and should be finished about noon. The winery pays 20 cents per pound, and usually between 1,500 and 2,000 pounds of grapes are picked.

The winery needs about 25 people, and eight spots remain to be filled.

The winery will provide a buffet lunch, and pickers can see the grapes being dumped and crushed in a machine.

The volunteers will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. To volunteer, e-mail Lois Weldon at lois@ku.edu or call 864-7611.
