From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 20, 1909: “W.R. Sullivan of the street car company announces he has taken an option on the Smith farm immediately back of the Oak Hill Cemetery as a site for the new park which the company is to build in Lawrence. The tract contains 50 acres and is one of the most beautiful spots in Kansas, covered with handsome trees. … Has the Laming deal for the building of an area interurban line fallen through? Several Lawrence men next to the situation say the Kansas City and Kansas Southwestern promoter has missed connection with the floating of his bonds and that there is no chance whatever of the line being built at this time. Apparently financing has fallen through at least for now. That may mean a forfeit of a $1,000 bond to Lawrence. … A number of local trees have been infested by a new type of bag worm that covers the limbs and destroys the foliage. This type of worm has never been found in Kansas but seems to be making inroads in our region.”
