The unofficial results are in. Lawrence public schools are down 15 students for the 2009-2010 school year.

The preliminary enrollment numbers, released Monday afternoon, list the total district enrollment at 10,805 students, including the Lawrence Virtual School.

“We just haven’t seen a whole lot of building in the community,” Superintendent Rick Doll said. “I don’t think it’s any great predictor. You just kind of look around and there aren’t many basements being dug right now or homes being built.”

The LVS high school program was discontinued this year, which accounted for 117 students in last year’s numbers.

The largest jump in students is at Cordley School, which has 54 more students than last year.

“Kids have moved quite a bit inside the district, and they don’t always end up at the same elementary school that they did last year, which then causes us to shift staff, and so there are always challenges associated with it, even when the numbers are stable,” Doll said.

The biggest decline is at Free State High, with a loss of 98 students.

The Lawrence Virtual School is down in its elementary enrollment by 22 students, but enrollment for the online program is open until Friday.

Overall, the district’s elementary schools are up 61 students, junior highs up 29 and the two high schools combined are down 105 students.

The official head count day this year is Sept. 21. Usually the state has its mandated head count Sept. 20, but this year, that date falls on a Sunday.
