From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 17, 1909: Finally, some relief is promised from the drought and scorching heat that have been making local life miserable for the past week. Needed showers are due tonight with some cooling tomorrow from near 100. We are due to have better nights for sleeping, according to university forecasters. . . . The state attorney general handed down another decision declaring that druggists no longer will be able to serve as liquor agents. That will make a lot of druggists angry and could lead to prosecutions for druggists who violate the ruling. . . . Charles Griggs of Topeka, engineer for the Santa Fe Road, was here today to lay out the plans for a new park which the road is to build across from the depot here. The railroad plans to spend up to $5,000 on the improvements. . . . State officials visiting here to discuss controversial recent insurance rate boosts are getting plenty of evidence, particularly from merchants who feel that under the new system they are being terribly overcharged.
