The Kansas Hospital Association announces recipients in the eighth annual Health Care Scholarship Program through the Kansas Hospital Education and Research Foundation. In addition to nine KHERF scholarships, the Kansas Hospital Human Resources Association and the Kansas Association of Health Care Executives provided four additional scholarships for a total of 13 scholarship recipients and 12 alternates.

The following local individuals were awarded scholarships and will be recognized at the 2009 KHA annual convention Nov. 12-13 in Wichita: Erica Bulmer, diagnostic cardiac sonography, $800 allied health scholarship, Lawrence Memorial Hospital; and Rachel Pepper, organizational leadership, nursing, $500 KAHCE scholarship, Kansas University Hospital.

The following local individuals were chosen as honorable mention awardees: Scott Kmiecik, master of health business administration; and Craig Petterson, master of health care management, both of KU Hospital.

Joshua and Emily Pritchard, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Caden Jaxson Pritchard, April 4, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

His maternal grandparents are Jeff and Janice Miller, Lawrence, and paternal grandparents are John and Renae Pritchard, Perry. His great-grandparents are Lloyd and Doris Wingert, Wes and Ruth Buller, and Eldon Miller, all of Lawrence, Carl and Neola Risinger, Valley Falls, and Paul Pritchard, Valley Center.

The Douglas County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) held its annual Reorganization Meeting July 16 at Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Station No. 5. The LEPC is responsible for developing an emergency plan to respond to chemical emergencies within the community. The main function of the LEPC is to look after community interests in regard to hazardous incidents that may occur.

During the meeting, the LEPC presented three Preparedness Partner Awards to the following:

• Lisa Patterson, city of Lawrence, in recognition of her leadership of the public information officers and dedication to serving the residents of Lawrence and Douglas County.

• Kim Ens, Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, in recognition for her leadership of Together Prepared and her proactive approach to planning for vulnerable populations within Douglas County.

• City of Lecompton, in recognition of its proactive approach to promoting personal preparedness and emergency planning for all residents and response agencies.
