100 years ago: Schools to be disinfected before semester starts

From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 15, 1909: Before school starts next month, every little school house over Douglas County must be disinfected as well as the larger buildings in Lawrence and Baldwin. Every school clerk must be in charge to prepare the buildings for state inspectors. This will mean quite an expense for the 85 districts in the county. . . . The state board of health reports that more than 100 Kansas hotels have been examined and told to meet health specifications but that none of them has done so. They will not be certified until they respond. So far, no Lawrence hotel has been certified. . . . William Murphy, a well-known Kanwaka Township farmer, had a severe loss early Saturday when his farm house caught fire and burned completely to the ground. Cause of the fire is not known but the Murphy family lost practically everything. . . . Prof. E.N. Raymond of the KU English department is the latest local resident to learn he landed a claim in the land drawing in Montana. His number was near the end of the list so his land will not be as expansive as three others here will get. He is not certain what he will do about the property.
