Tiger terrific at PGA Championship

Tiger Woods tees off of the 13th hole during the first round of the PGA Championship. Woods fired a 5-under-par 67 on Thursday at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

? Tiger Woods was twirling his club, not tossing them at his bag in disgust. Putts that grazed the edge of the hole and caused him so much angst were for birdie, not par or worse.

Woods had no complaints Thursday in the first round of the PGA Championship.

The only concerns might come from the guys chasing him.

Woods played bogey-free at Hazeltine National for a 5-under 67, building a one-shot lead over defending champion Padraig Harrington for an ideal start as he tries to capture a major in his last chance this year.

Not since Carnoustie two years ago has Woods managed to break 70 in the opening round of a major. Not since St. Andrews four years ago has he had the lead to himself after the first round.

More telling was a scorecard without a blemish.

It was only the third time that Woods has opened a major with a bogey-free round — the other two were at the U.S. Open and British Open in 2000, which he won by a combined 23 shots.

Phil Mickelson struggled off the tee and with his short putts in his round of 74.

In the traditional group of major champions this year, Lucas Glover was the only one to break par with a 71. Masters champion Angel Cabrera had a 76, while British Open winner Stewart Cink had two double bogeys in his round of 73.

Woods and Harrington, the winners of the last three PGAs, played in the morning when the greens were relatively smooth and the wind had only just begun to swirl through these tree-lined fairways.

Equally impressive were two other past PGA champions — Vijay Singh and David Toms — who were at 69 while playing in the afternoon, and should get the best conditions in the second round. Singh hit his best shot around the trees and into the sun, not seeing that it spun back an inch or two from the hole at No. 16.

John Daly withdrew from the tournament after finishing with consecutive double bogeys for a 78. He cited a back injury.

NFL

Stallworth suspended

New York — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell decided Donte’ Stallworth’s football punishment should last much longer than his 24 days in jail. The Cleveland Browns receiver, who pleaded guilty to killing a pedestrian while driving drunk, was suspended without pay Thursday for the entire season. He is barred from team activities until he is reinstated after the Super Bowl.

“Your conduct endangered yourself and others, leading to the death of an innocent man,” Goodell wrote in a letter to Stallworth released by the league.

Stallworth struck 59-year-old crane operator Mario Reyes the morning of March 14 in Miami. He pleaded guilty June 16 to DUI manslaughter, a second-degree felony, and was suspended indefinitely by Goodell two days later.

Stallworth drew a 30-day jail sentence and reached an undisclosed financial settlement with the family of Reyes.

Bills’ Owens ruled out

Pittsford, N.Y. — Terrell Owens will miss the Buffalo Bills’ preseason game against Chicago this weekend because of a sprained toe that has prevented him from practicing all week. Coach Dick Jauron ruled Owens out of Saturday’s game after practice Thursday night, saying the toe is healing but the team doesn’t want to take any chances with the receiver aggravating the injury.

IOC backs golf for 2016

Berlin — Golf and rugby took a big step toward joining 2016 Summer Olympics, making the cut after the IOC rejected bids from baseball, softball and three other sports.

The International Olympic Committee executive board Thursday also denied squash, karate and roller sports.

The board will submit golf and rugby sevens — a faster-paced version of the standard 15-a-side game — for ratification by the full 106-member IOC assembly in Copenhagen in October.

Final approval will require a simple majority vote by the full IOC. Rogge said the sports will be put to individual votes, not as a tandem.

The board also approved the inclusion of women’s boxing in the 2012 London Olympics. Boxing had been the only summer Olympic sport without female competitors.

The golf decision opens the possibility of Tiger Woods playing for an Olympic gold medal in 2016.

Golf proposes a 72-hole stroke-play competition for men and women, with 60 players in each field. The world’s top 15 players would qualify automatically, and all major professional tours would alter tournament schedules to avoid a clash with the Olympics and let the big names play.

Pitino gains support

Louisville, Ky. — University of Louisville president James Ramsey says it’s time to move on after Rick Pitino’s public apology for sex with a woman outside his marriage. Ramsey said Thursday that the basketball coach is “our guy” and that he believes the school will become stronger following Pitino’s expression of remorse on Wednesday. The coach’s apology came after police documents became public showing Pitino admitted sex six years ago with a woman who is now charged in federal court with trying to extort money from the coach.
