17-year-old arrested after Wednesday morning knife incident

One 17-year-old boy was arrested and another was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a fight Wednesday morning.

Lawrence police responded to the call just after midnight Wednesday.

Lawrence police Sgt. Susan Hadl said a group of friends was standing in the driveway at 1446 Elmwood St. talking to one another. They were then accosted by a group of three white males, two of whom police knew to be 17 years old.

The groups clashed and the situation escalated when one of the 17-year-old boys brandished a knife. Sgt. Hadl said the boy reportedly gave the impression he was going to attack someone with the weapon. When police responded to the scene they found one of the 17-year-old boys unconscious. Officers reported the boy had been hit by one of the other group members. The boy was transported and admitted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

The subject with the knife took off on foot when officers arrived at the scene and eluded the police. He was apprehended about 30 minutes later, two blocks east of the original incident.

The 17-year-old was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and for having outstanding warrants.
